Why Is My Central Heating Not Coming On?

“Why is my central heating not coming on when it should do?”

It's a common question we’re asked and in all honesty, it could be for a number of reasons but there are a few common problems.

Not all problems require an engineer to rectify and sometimes it’s just a simple fix.

One of the most common faults is the boiler not igniting, which could happen for a number of reasons:

The boiler has no power!

  • There is a power outage caused by severe weather conditions.

  • The thermostat’s settings may have been inadvertently changed.

  • The boiler has been accidentally turned off.

  • The circuit was overloaded, and the breaker has tripped.

  • Your home has reached the preset temperature.

Boiler Pressure too Low or too high.

  • Pressure too high. There may be an air-lock in the system which is preventing the boiler from igniting.

    • Bleed radiators if you know how.

  • Pressure too low. There may be a leak somewhere in the system. Check all visible parts of the system, pipes, radiators, etc. for signs of leaks.

    • If possible tighten any joints or values where leaks are present.

We appreciate that when a fault occurs, it’s not always possible to diagnose the reason yourself and we’re always happy to talk through any issue you might be experiencing on the telephone and of course, attend to rectify any problem ourselves, if it can’t be resolved easily.

The best way to ensure you don‘t get caught out this winter is to make sure your boiler and heating system has been checked out by an engineer before anything goes wrong.

We have regular service plans in place with many local customers but if your system hasn’t been looked at since last winter and you don’t want to leave things to, chance, give us a call before the weather gets really cold, when a faulty boiler can become more thyan just an inconvenience.
