5 Tips To Make Sure Your Boiler Doesn’t Let You Down Over The Winter

The temperature is really starting to drop now which means we REALLY need our boilers to be in peak condition. Not only to keep us warm but also, given the energy price increases, to make sure it is working efficiently too!

So we’ve put together some tips and hacks to make sure your boiler won’t let you down over the winter and what to do if it does.

Get it serviced!

I know, we would say that, wouldn’t we?

But seriously a regular service is the single best thing you can do for your boiler.  Having a service can mean that preventative maintenance action can be taken to avoid costly urgent repairs.

And let’s face it, it’s always when the weather’s at its coldest and your boiler’s needed the most when it breaks down. Nobody really wants to have a forced cold shower!

Bleed Your Radiators

Bleeding your radiators is not only great for efficiency, it's great for taking the pressure off your boiler. Radiators that are full of trapped air, heat slowly and inconsistently and put more pressure on your boiler, increasing the risk of it breaking down.

Airlocks in radiators also reduce their efficiency, so it’s not good for keeping warm and saving money.

Check Your Thermostats

This is a really simple tip to make sure your rooms are heating as they should do. Simply adjust the thermostat and see how the heating responds. If you find it doesn’t then now may be a good time to check batteries or even replace with a smart thermostat. (enter link to the previous blog)

Check For Leaks

Giving your boiler a visual check every now and then is a really simple and great way of avoiding any breakdowns and jumping on a repair early. Check for leaks, cracks, rust and oxidation of pipes etc. Any signs of this and it's time to call the plumber.

Check your pipes

In the depths of Winter, when early morning temperatures often fall well below zero, it’s easy for exposed or unlagged pipes to freeze up. This can both burst your pipes and break your boiler. You can avoid this problem by checking all exposed pipes for adequate insulation. This will keep the water flowing when the temperature starts to dip. You can get ready-made pipe lagging cheaply from all good DIY shops.
